Our Story

Barcelos Flame Grilled Chicken is well-known, industry-leading brand. After our humble beginnings in 1993, with only one store operating in Pretoria (South Africa), we started growing exponentially. The continuous growth resulted in us embarking on the franchising journey, in 1998. We have been expanding our business persistently ever since, establishing our global brand. With today's global trends demanding a fast lane approach in so many aspects of our lives, there is little time available to enjoy good, old-fashioned traditions and ideals. This applies equally to food and eating habits around the world. Therefore, we at Barcelos are determined to find the perfect balance between the traditional, healthy home-style cuisine, and the fast pace demands of modern society. Our quick-service restaurants specialise in the traditional Portuguese way of serving healthy and scrumptious flame grilled chicken. Prepared as authentically as it was mastered by the Portuguese hundreds ofyears ago, our recipes have been passed down through generations and are still our best kept secret. Our original flavour is unsurpassed and, after centuries, still satisfies the most discerning palate. The current focus on healthy living, and simultaneous demand for affordable, quickly served food are the substance of our recipe for success. Brand History

Barcelos started operating in South Africa in 1993, and has been developing prosperously ever since. To date, Barcelos boasts over 138 outlets in more than 16 countries.
The founders of the brand are all still actively involved in the daily operations of the company, ensuring continuity and excellence throughout the brand.
The brand's South African head office is situated in Centurion, with national distribution centres in Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg, as well as other international offices (e.g. Gaborone and London).
The internal logistics and distribution network of the franchise, ensure delivery of licensed products from its manufacturing facilities to each outlet in South Africa and abroad.
All staff training adheres to the highest standards ofthe brand, and is executed at an internal training academy in Centurion. It is mandatory for all franchisees and staff, both local and international, to be trained under the watchful eyes of the franchisor.
